We collect two basic types of information from you in conjunction with your use of the Website: personally identifiable information and non-personally identifiable information. Personally identifiable information (“PII”) is any information that can individually identify you and includes your name and contact information, such as your e-mail address, telephone number, or postal address. Non-personally identifiable information (“Non-PII”) includes information that does not personally identify you, but it may be linkable to you. Examples of Non-PII include device identifiers, IP addresses, demographic information and general location information. If Non-PII is directly linked to PII, it will be considered PII while it is linked. Aggregate and de-identified information is not considered PII.
As a general matter, you can browse the Website without submitting your PII to us. However, there are a number of circumstances in which you may supply us with your PII. The following lists the most common ways in which we may collect your PII.
When you interact with any API property page or account on a social media platform, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or LinkedIn, we may collect the PII that you make available to us on that page or account including your account ID or “handle.” However, we will comply with the privacy policies of the corresponding social media platform and we will only collect and store such PII that we are permitted to collect by these social media platforms. If you choose to link to or access the Website with or through a social networking service, we and that service may share certain information about you and your activities. With your consent, we also may share information about your activities, including what you view on the Website, with that social network’s users.
In addition, when you interact with the Website, we may collect Non-PII and our servers may automatically keep an activity log of your use of our Website. Generally, we collect and store the following categories of Non-PII.
Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but, if you prefer, you can usually modify your browser setting to disable or reject cookies. If you delete your cookies or if you set your web browser to decline cookies, some features of the Website may not work or may not work as designed. For more information on cookies and how to disable them, you can consult the information provided by the Interactive Advertising Bureau at www.allaboutcookies.org.
We may also use web beacons or flash cookies. A web beacon or flash cookie (also known as “action tags”, “tracer tags”, or “single-pixel gifs”) is an invisible graphic on a web page that is programmed to collect Non-PII about your use of a given website. We do not share or provide PII we may collect through such web beacons, such as names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers without your express permission.
We may also use “Web Storage” to store data about your use of our Website. Web Storage is a feature in some browsers that permits websites to store data within your browser rather than within a cookie. This should make this data more secure and make your browser perform better. We do not share or provide PII we may store in Web Storage, such as names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers without your express permission.
The Website is not intended for minors under 18 years of age. Unless otherwise disclosed during collection and with parent or guardian consent, we do not knowingly collect personal information from minore under 18 years of age. If you are under 18 years of age, do not provide personal information to us without providing us with consent from your parents. If we discover that a minor under the age of 18 has provided us with personal information and we do not have parental consent, we will immediately delete that minor’s information from the Website. If you believe that we have been provided with the personal information of a minor under the age of 18 without parental consent, please notify us immediately at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We use the information we learn from you to help us personalize and continually improve your experience on the Website. We may use your PII and Non-PII in the following ways:
We may use the information to:
We may use the information from one portion of the Website on other portions of the Website or in our network of Websites, all of which are owned and operated by API, and we may combine information gathered from multiple portions of the Website into a single user record. We may also use and/or combine information that we collect off-line or that we collect or receive from third party sources to enhance, expand, and check the accuracy of your customer records. If we combine information collected from the Website with information subject to additional restrictions on use or disclosure, such as information protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, as amended, including implementing regulations (collectively, “HIPAA”) we will apply the more restrictive rules to the combined information.
We have or may in the future have third party agents and partners that perform functions on our behalf, such as hosting, content syndication, content management, social media integration, marketing, analytics, billing, storage, shipping, fulfillment, distribution, customer service, and fraud protection. These entities may have access to the PII needed to perform their functions. If such access is required, the third parties will be contractually obligated to maintain the confidentiality and security of that PII.
We also may use or disclose PII if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to (a) conform to applicable law or comply with legal process served on us or the Website; (b) protect and defend our rights or property, the Website or our users, and (c) act under emergency circumstances to protect the personal safety of us, our affiliates, agents, or the users of the Website or the public.
We may disclose or share Non-PII in any other manner that we deem appropriate or necessary. Among other things, we will disclose Non-PII to third parties to help us determine how people use parts of the Website and who our users are so we can improve our Website. We will also disclose Non-PII to our partners and other third parties about how our users collectively use the Website.
We are concerned about ensuring the security of your PII and take reasonable security measures to protect such information. Please understand, however, that while we try our best to safeguard your PII once we receive it, no transmission of data over the Internet or any other public network can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.
You need to help protect the privacy of your own information. You must take precautions to protect the security of any PII that you may transmit over any home networks, wireless routers, wireless (WiFi) networks or similar devices by using encryption and other techniques to prevent unauthorized persons from intercepting or receiving any of your PII. You are responsible for the security of your information when using unencrypted, open access or otherwise unsecured networks.
The time period for which we keep information varies according to what the information is used for. In some cases, there are legal requirements to keep data for a minimum period. Unless there is a specific legal requirement for us to keep the information, we will retain it for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which the data was collected or for which it is to be further processed.
You may send an email to email@example.com to request the correction or deletion any PII that you have provided to us. Be advised that we may not be able to delete your PII without also deleting your user account. You will not be permitted to examine the PII of any other person or entity and may be required to provide us with PII to verify your identity prior to accessing any records containing information about you. We may not accommodate a request to change or delete PII if we believe doing so would violate any law or legal requirement, or cause the information to be incorrect.
